The Zealots were not rebels without a cause. They were fierce defenders of YHWH’s authority, rising against Roman occupation not for politics—but for covenant faithfulness. Their passion burned against idolatry, foreign rule, and corrupt priesthoods, upholding the Hebrew worldview of YHWH as the sole King.
The Zealots believed YHWH alone was King (Exodus 15:18: “YHWH will reign forever and ever”).
Roman rule meant paganism, taxes to Caesar, and blasphemy, which the Zealots fiercely opposed.
The priesthood had become corrupt, more loyal to Rome than to YHWH, sparking Zealot outrage.
The Zealots aimed to restore Israel’s independence under YHWH’s sole authority.
They sought to remove foreign idols imposed by Roman occupation.
Inspired by Phinehas (Numbers 25) and the Maccabees, they stood against compromise.
Not every Zealot wielded a sword. Many resisted Rome through:
